A few thoughts on "Quality"

Hi. You’ve probably seen something strange under the Croove script recently. Some people think it’s a misunderstanding, others think it’s malicious intent, and still others see it as an attempt to humiliate new authors. I’ve decided to go into full detail about this in a separate post. And I’ll try to help you understand my thoughts and the theme that has been running through some of my posts for quite some time now.

First. Factors to consider.

  1. I’m writing using a translator.
  2. Aside from this forum, I don’t communicate with anyone in English.
  3. I’ve never had any friends. Just acquaintances (the kind you ask for homework help from) when I was in school, but that was a long time ago. My contacts list only includes my parents—that’s it.
  4. I’ve never been to a movie theater, a zoo, a theater, or a fast-food restaurant in my life. I’ve been to a café once. There are plenty of these places in my city, but I don’t go there.
  5. I have low self-esteem. I’m always unsure whether my work is just a bunch of junk.
This leads to the conclusion that my communication skills and social skills are very poor. This isn’t an excuse or an attempt to elicit pity from anyone. It’s just something to keep in mind when you read my posts.

Here’s my overall thought: “Quality is on the decline.” Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what I believe. Here are two videos as examples. In the first one, the creator did everything by hand from scratch, while the second was made using pre-made animations—they simply swapped out the model. Creating the first one took a very long time and was very labor-intensive (I’d estimate about 80-100 hours of work), whereas the second can be done quickly (I can’t say exactly how long, but since the creator releases videos like this every 2–3 days, it’s probably about 5–10 hours of work). And they have the same number of likes (obviously, they’re different genres, and recognizable characters might also influence this metric, but let’s set that aside). And there are more and more of these. I often see people taking pre-made animations from 千刃花 or 3mura and releasing them without changing a thing (i.e., without optimizing the animations for the model). And then it turns out that the dick doesn’t go into the pussy or the girls are floating in mid-air. And people are liking this and enjoying it. I just don’t get it at all.
I’d just be too embarrassed to post something like that.
And that’s when I feel resentful. But my resentment isn’t directed at the people who make this content or the people who watch it—not at all. I feel bad for creators like Wataame, who put in the effort and spend a ton of time, yet end up getting the same treatment as people who just churn out quick, simple content. And when I find myself in a similar situation, that resentment is directed first and foremost at myself. And it turns into self-hatred. Why can’t I do that too? Why am I so weird? Or maybe I’m just making crap, and I don’t even realize it. Why am I doing anything at all? And it’s not jealousy—if it were, everything would be simple. I don’t even understand what this feeling is myself.

And in the comment, “It’s a shame that people only notice the first script posted for a particular video. Quality doesn’t matter. I just wasted five hours. Oh well, those are just my problems.” Those were exactly the feelings I had. That’s why there was no hatred toward others in it (I wouldn’t have included a direct link in the post to a script by someone I don’t like), but only hatred and insecurity toward myself. And, of course, a slight desire to push the post to the top of the new posts list on the Eroscripts homepage.

It’s just that I’m not sure myself if there’s any “Quality” in my videos or scripts. I don’t know. I just spend a lot of time making them, and some people like them. I cling to this mythical “Quality” as the only thing that can put me on the same level as normal people. Without it, I’ll just be a total idiot who’s behind everyone else, who can’t do anything and can’t give people what they want because of my weird tastes. Or maybe that’s already the case, and I just don’t see it.

This post is simply meant to give you a better understanding of my thoughts. It’s not to justify myself or to get sympathy from anyone. It’s just meant to help you understand me better. It’s hard for normal people to understand someone who’s strange. That’s why he’s strange. So I tried to explain it in detail.

Do you follow my train of thought?

  • Yes
  • No
  • Unclear (you’re strange, with strange thoughts)

P.S. I hope no one here reads hidden hatred toward anyone into this. You’re overestimating me. I’m too dumb for that. o( ❛ᴗ❛ )o
I usually use the Deepl translator. This time, I decided to try DeeplAI.

If you want, you can reply, but I think I’ve explained everything in detail. So it’s better not to start another discussion with a bunch of posts.

Your thoughts seem very normal to me, and the sort of socially sheltered upbringing leading to having a hard time being understood reminds me a lot of my younger brother.
A lot of people on here appreciate you and care about your well-being. Sometimes you cross a social boundary for some people, and they’ll react accordingly. The best response to that is to accept the feedback and introspect whether you might want to adapt your public statements going forward to avoid causing that reaction again.

I hope you know that you’re free to chat in DMs with the regulars about anything that troubles you. A lot of us are open to listen, and offer our thoughts if you want them.

If theres two scripts for a vid I ussaly analyze them to see which one id want. The thing is someone is going to want either regardless :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I fully understand your thoughts and agree with them. Quality work takes a long time to complete. The best examples I can think of for creators that put out, for example, high quality animations like Nagoonimation or Yeero do so every 2-3 months and thats when they go into crunch time and sooner or later get burned out.

I would gladly see more of those kinds of creators but the issue is that the market is just so saturated that it’s becoming harder and harder to stand out and make a living from it. So if you’re an up-and-coming creator, you will need to grind your hobby of making high quality animations next to at the very least a part-time job with little hope of ever making a living out of it. So new releases stall even more. And nowadays it moves so fast that if you can’t consistently put out new stuff you will be forgotten which furthers the problem. (Obviously there are exceptions to the rule)

I appreciate everyone who loves what they do and hold themselves to a high standard. This includes, among others, you.

I want to also say that i just used animations as an example. I know scripts can take a long time as well.

In the age of AI this conversation has only become more common. I too think it’s unfortunate that low effort mid content is what makes the top of the list these days rather than carefully crafted passion works.

When two users create a script for a given piece of media, both are allowed to exist for one reason or another. The problem is there’s no rule being broken, and no rule can be created to “fix” this. There isn’t even really a problem. The problem lies in whether the low effort version is actually just low effort and only the market can decide if that matters, anything else would amount to censorship.

I still think it’s worth the human component. I think that still matters. You can often tell the difference between something made with passion and care and something made with low effort. I think that’s true for scripts as well. I think a core problem is how few players support multiple versions of scripts. It’s more time-consuming and effort to test multiple versions of a script. How often would someone download a version, try it out and think “meh good enough”

I think more of us need to ask ourselves if the grass is greener on the other side more.

Agreed.

There is something I tell everybody who work on private projects, you can see it in coding projects, musicians who put their hard work on youtube, scripters and so much other things:

  • First and foremost: Do it for yourself!
  • Try to do it best you can.
  • Do it with passion.

Does the musician who composed his song with love and passion, who wrote every line of that song from the bottom of his heart, who played and recorded every single instrument himself get’s the same attention than a simple “boom, boom, boom, everybody hands in the air, boom, boom, boom” crap with a video with some hot chicks and a few fast cars?
Nope, and it doesn’t matter.
Because he can listen to his own creation, he will be happy while listening, he can say: “That’s a good song, done with passion.”

I use my own software, I play my own scripts, I watch my own video edits, I am self-reflecting and I am the most critic on my own work.
It’s not always done best I can, but as long as it was done with passion, I’m quite fine with it.
Say that about your own creations and give a fuck about what an anonymous majority of consume-driven strangers from the internet think.

That’s how I code, that’s how I script, that’s how I do own video edits.
Love me (my work) or hate me (my work), haters gonna hate, and those who like me (my work), they like me (my work) for who I am (what I do/create) and not for what I pretend to be.
A single, honest feedback from someone who knows the difference between passion and cheap commerce, between quality and crap is worth more than 1000 clicks of braindead zombies who consume just for the sake of consummation.

Yes, it is a sad thing that work of passion doesn’t always get the same attention as cheap crap, but we are not living in a perfect world, it is what it is, and what’s left for us is to be able to look in the mirror and be able to say: “Yes, that’s me, I don’t sell my soul, I’m true to myself, and it is good who I am!”

With that said:

Because you care of what you do, and you fit (at least in parts) in what I’ve wrote above.

Scratch weird, exchange with “special”.
Be proud of being special, just look at those “not-special” people, they make profit, they make war, they destroy the nature, they drive fast cars, they fuck bitches from the club … these are the “common” people, you don’t wanna be like them, do you?

Life’s too short to waste it on being worried all the time. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yeah I think the only way the average user is going to go completely out of their way to try out multiple scripts is if their current script is bad enough, and the video is good enough to warrant the effort.

I download multiple scripts all the time personally, but I recognize i’m not the average user, I generate my own merges and customize scripts via OFS all the time, which most users don’t care to do.

I can’t speak to others, but I can tell at a glance low effort scripts/AI generated scripts and I just don’t bother downloading them. The effort needed to fix atrociously bad scripts is more than just scripting from scratch most of the time. So speaking from my POV, I see low effort scripts as a non issue. But I can see how it might be an issue for those less experienced in recognizing that kind of thing.

I don’t think it would need a rule regardless of if you could create one. I think the community will fix this kind of thing themselves via feedback or user experience.
