So I built an OSR2 last year and finally got the Handy last week and ignoring the broad ecosystem support for the Handy, there are two things that I feel the Handy does better. It offers true linear motion and is relatively quiet whereas the OSR always felt angled and not completely straight. I understand you have the 2 axis freedom, but the Handy feels much better overall.
I know there is the SSR1 which offers true linear motion and quietness like the Handy but that seems to be far less popular in this community. Not sure why that is the case given that the multi-axis capability of the OSR2 is hardly used for any videos.
P.S. I know there is FUNSR1 which is based on the SSR1 but even that seems to be less popular. I just hope true linear motion devices with position control become more widely available.
SSR1 is still in a beta state as Tempest was working on it (marked as alpha4 I believe) still before switching to other projects at around June-September last year. As a result it hasn’t had much time to really be noticed let alone replace people looking to upgrade or purchase an Handy.
Plus the fact you had to DIY it yourself at some point to fix problems despite purchasing it pre-built easily puts people off.
Keep in mind that OSR2/SR6 are both came out after the Handy and don’t have that much market/usage share alongside Marketing. (they’re also a ton more price wise than the Handy) NOTE: I think SR6 was first mentioned back at the end of 2020 with it’s release update being in mid 2022, OSR2 was early 2020 with it’s release update being only a few months afterwards although last big update was in later 2021. Meanwhile SSR1 was first mentioned early 2023 and last update was maybe mid 2023. Handy has been around since 2020.
Finally something that seems to be an reoccurring thing is people think that more axis means better but nope, some people only like single axis movement meanwhile others really like the extra axis. I believe that is something that people need to look at before going multi-axis since there’s been more than an handful of posts selling their devices after finding it to not be worthwhile.
However the male sex toy market has been very under cooked since prior to 2020 I think the Fleshlight Launch was the best around and that’s invisible now due to it being too slow. Female toys have been cooked more just sell better.
Looking back on this ramble
I have no idea how I said this much while not answering or replying to the point of your thread…though I hope that the things I’ve said are useful/helpful despite it all being an ramble around.
All good info . I didn’t realize that the Handy was released so long while back (I thought the OSR2 came earlier). Very impressive that Handy has held out well all these years - guess that speaks to the practicality of that design.
Marketing also helped it a ton since once it got popular enough that companies started doing funscript integration they could drop all marketing since those sites now do the advertising for them. SLR is the most well known one now. For me I found it when I had some cash spare at the time and was wondering why there just appeared to be nothing for male’s except cock rings and electro-stim while the female market was overflowing with toys. (still is)
You would hope that the price of the Handy would have started decreasing now though since it was 189 (Euros) at release and still is today. Though at least it hasn’t gone up.
For that price though I believe…you can make an SSR1 however depends on where you get your parts and the ones you select that are compatible. So that plus you gotta DIY it alongside that it’s not easily supported (I believe it’s T-code based) are reasons against getting it over the Handy.
Though I believe it is more suitable to be used as an fucking machine since it has more power than the Handy but not heard anyone test it for that let alone causally attempt to use it for that.
The noise level is the one and only advantage of the Handy over the OSR2.
The fact that motion is in an arc with the OSR2 really doesn’t matter in practice.
In terms of performance, the OSR2 has a higher top speed, higher power (i.e. ability to handle sleeve weight), faster response time, and no limit on script size. It really is only the noise level that’s an issue. If you consume all content with noise-cancelling headphones or ear buds, that issue all but completely disappears.
The OSR2 also runs on wired power, which means it never runs out of battery. It also never stops due to overheating, as the Handy does, though if you’re using a fanless design, this is likely not a positive (the servos definitely need active cooling for fast scripts).
Another advantage of the OSR2, which I only recently started taking advantage of, is the ability to introduce roll to a script. Even if the media you’re using has no roll script, you can use MultiFunPlayer to add a deterministic or random amount of roll to any script. It can make a pretty big difference, and provide novelty to scripts that may otherwise feel overly familiar and boring.
I think the Handy is an excellent option for someone who wants a predictable out-of-the-box experience with consumer-level safeties built in. Anyone who is prepared to deal with the caveats of the OSR2 (more noise, no safety features, DIY experience overall) should do so.
At no point have I ever thought the trajectory of the toy was a real factor.
THIS. I 100% agree. There is no “sex act” in the world that is entirely on a single axis. The arc of the OSR2+ when combined with pitch and roll make it feel SO much more realistic and immersive. I’ve gone back to the Handy several times when my personal OSR2+ was being modified or repaired and the Handy feels super artificial and “dead” in comparison. But like EVERYTHING that has to do with sex toys - preferences and experiences WILDLY differ from person to person.
Also agree with this. The Handy is an EXCELLENT first timer device. Even though I sell OSR2+ units, I still recommend the Handy for first timers. Just a well polished device that can serve as a gateway device (or endgame device) for anyone.
