Does anyone feel that VR porn has plateaued?

Back in 2017, videos just kept getting better and better. Better resolution every six months. It was amazing! Passthrough came a few years ago and was great. Nowadays, things have maxed out technology wise and the scenes are all recycled at this point. In same ways I like many older scenes even if the resolution is worse, for some reason.

Am I the only one that feels this way?

The recording tech has matured I would say. The 8K resolution is higher than any VR headset can benefit from. It’s not like TV where we have 8K panel, but no one produce content beyond 4K. Also, VR still hasn’t gotten it’s breakthrugh and is still a niche product. The hardware itself is sold close to manufacturing cost or slightly subsidized, at least that’s what the estimates for Meta Quest are.

The Covid effect is also a reality. There are no more porn stars in the same way as pre-Covid. Many new talents start mainstream for a year and run an OF in parallel. Once they have enough followers/subs they tend to go all out on OF. Some do a comeback to mainstream to let new people discover them and their OF. At least that’s my theory.

I can only assume that the VR porn market doesn’t grow much since the VR market doesn’t really grow. The competition is also more fierce now I would say. There are so many small studios with lots of content. In the beginning there were only the big studios organized in a few networks. All this means that studios who want to maximise their profits won’t produce as much new material as before or they do the same but with smaller budgets.

New talents are cheaper than the established stars, much like the mainstream movie industry. You also recognize the sets that studios use. They use the same houses over and over which makes it feel repetetive. It becomes even more apparent for studios like VRCosplay. They don’t even seem to care about setting up a fitting set matching the costume anymore. A living room isn’t a good set for a scene with a fantasy game character. DarkRoomVR used to use the same script for every production. Every shoot was predictable and you knew exactly the order of positions (maybe that has changed now, idk since I rarely watch their content anymore).

Top all this with an ever evolving AI tech that’s been easily available and affordable (at least until now). You can compare it with how movie studios tend to recycle old movie scripts with a remake or simply make a TV serie based on old movies.

fck, this really became a wall of text :grimacing:

TLDR:
VR has stagnated and thus VR porn has done the same now that the recording tech is good enough.

Yeah, porn in general plateaued and it’s much more visible in the already small VR niche. I think most of the videos completely waste the VR potential and there is not enough variety.

Novelty of VR has worn off. Big impact when it was fresh and new, less now that you’re used to it. Now nostalgic for that initial impact.

Repetition is just a fact of life in the entertainment industry–probably more so in porn because the nature of the industry doesn’t attract the concentration of creatives that other genres do.

Putting on my tinfoil hat for a bit, I would say that some of the blame can be placed on the proliferation of studios who are established and led by a performer that just happens to have a big dick. No saying that you can’t be creative AND have a big dick AND make VR porn–its just that the combo isn’t common. So we end up with formulaic content.

Yes and no just look at sim racing they have haptic suits, motion systems, sound systems and feedback from wheels. VR porn just needs an ecosystem with products that improve immersion.

Needs to be more realtime. When performers can live fuck 5000+ VR-helmeted viewers at once attached to haptics, it will have peaked, but by then fuckbots will likely be a thing since they’re sort of a crappy thing already, and there’s more than enough testosterone to make that one a reality.

Meanwhile, in China, they’re getting scared: China Enacts New Laws To Clamp Down On AI Girlfriends

As for the content, I mean how many different ways can you make one of these videos? The only thing I’ve noticed from funscripts is that some performers seem to have a distinctive way they move that comes through across multiple funscripts from multiple scripters.

Proper sex bots will take a while to come out and what you talked about can already happen right now you can repurpose vr game haptics for vr porn I’m saying an ecosystem needs to be created which can easily done in 1 to 2 years that same time line for sex bots would not be same. You can argue vr porn needs more variety and niches someone said most things are pov etc if you haven’t already look into vr porn games and vr 3d/2d videos as that is still vr porn it’s just vr porn involving real people that is stagnant.

Not sure I agree with the resolution argument fully. While 8K seems a lot, for 180degree VR movies, only parts of that is shown, meaning the actual on screen resolution is somewhat lower.
When tested my recently acquired 2x4K VR headset that has near no screen door effect anymore, the resolution and/or bitrate can still be somewhat an issue. I need to see if I can source the same video in 8 and 12K resolution to compare, if things compare. Not many 12K VR videoes so far.

I’m not comfortable running closed source executables in this space. Doubly so on Windows. But even then, devices like the handy cannot keep up over bluetooth compared to downloading a script, and the makers of the handy are creepy enough to not just let the thing execute unprotected scripts entirely from a samba drive so I give up. But given some of the more out there humpbots that exist already, it doesn’t seem like we’re far from one that can walk and wash itself, end of the decade at worst, and that’s where this gets interesting and I drink the whiny impotent tears of the haters. When I say I prefer a fuckbot over another doomed relationship with a fellow sack of decaying flesh in its last 1/3 of existence, I say that from experience, even more so when most of the societally approved options in my demographic are two steps away from assisted living given the consequences of their choices and I’m… just… not…

There are plenty of open source programs here and from this community and what I talked about with vr becoming more immersive is closer to happening than proper sex bots we are very far from sex bots that move on their own, replicate a human 100% without uncanny valley and whatever else advancements and features that people want.

The glorious thing about men is that the more aroused we are, the lower our standards become. There’s no unhorny valley, it fills in almost immediately at the sight of an attractively ornamented orifice because men are pervs with almost no exception. But you’re right, even a consumer grade EEG and a fitness tracker hooked up to a convnet to edge and provide generative visuals is doable today.

Vanilla content, quality of actresses in terms of performing and looks has gone way down, there are still a few good ones, and the occasional gem, but they vanish pretty quickly to OF. Better for the performers, but shittier for us.

I don’t know. I think it’s all great lol.

I’ve been watching VR porn off and on since 2019 with the earliest Naughty America VR vids and it just keeps getting better. The hardware, talent, distance to the viewer, all of it keeps improving. I recently watched a 5-year old video and remember thinking at the time I first watched it that it just couldn’t get any better. But when re-watching it now, it was pixelated, the talent were GIANTS, and the perspective was off (they appeared to be twice my size irl and my joint was 4 feet lower than where my eyes were).

I imagine we’ll think the same thing when we watch our recent favorites 5 years from now and they don’t work with our new fully articulating robots or don’t have the z-depth the newer versions will have or whatever they continue to add to create more realism/fantasy.

Sure, some studios have a cut and paste position catalog, because they know that’s what sells for them at the moment, but others do make the effort to add something original to the mix and the competition pays attention.

I do believe that VR has sort of plateaued, but I do not see that as an inherently bad thing. I don’t think the wheel needs to be re-invented every 5 years.

I think that during the first years the improvements felt like giant leaps because it was a new thing and there were a lot of things that could get better. These days the improvements are more about polishing the experience rather than taking it to a whole new level, and I’m “sort of” fine with that. At this point I don’t watch regular 2D porn anymore, it’s been years since I watched anything that is not VR. By now VR is my sort of natural thing, I don’t need something drastically different.

Having said that, there have been some interesting developments in the latest years, the addition of Passthrough has been freaking awesome! I also think that despite being a company with little to no consumer friendly policies, VRBangers is always trying new things (their director Kate Kaz is really good, she’s always trying to do different things to keep things fresh), and the concept behind Dezyred is interesting, interactive and fun (it’s expensive AF but that’s what you get when there’s no competition). On the other hand, there’s Badoink which repeats the same formula over and over (but don’t get me wrong, I love Badoink -which is why it’s the studio that I have scripted the most for) because they give me a consistent experience every week.

What I would like to see in the future is something like what Braindance is trying to achieve, but in a way that is interactive and not just watching solo-experiences from all angles.

8K is plenty for me, but the bitrate must be high. There are a lot of 8K videos that look like trash because the bitrate is too low. HDR also does wonders for immersion on OLED VR headsets.

True.

Compression software needs to get better and it will. Video definition will also continue to rise as our headsets get better, lighter, and have wider FOVs, viewer enabled Z-focusing and true user defined X,Y, Z positioning, etc.

AI will also enable videos to inject (what will seem like real-time) vocal and visual-cue responses from the actresses when you talk to them, moan, place your hands over them, etc.

They’ll always find ways to get our $$$ from our hands to theirs.

I agree with a lot of what Sentinel said. I was an early adopter of VR and VR porn more than ten years ago, and the pace of improvement from around 2014 to 2018 was crazy. Every year, or even every few months, there was a noticeable jump

I do think it has plateaued, but to me that feels more like the format maturing than dying off.

What interests me more now is how passthrough changes the experience. If the performer can appear directly in your room, elaborate sets matter a lot less. It becomes much more about the performer’s looks, personality, chemistry, and whether they can actually sell the scene as a whole

That’s also why new talent is probably the biggest source of novelty for me. Pretty much like standard 2D porn. Finding someone new is one of the main reasons I still check SLR every once in a while.

Also, like Polt said, I really like what Braindance VR is doing and had a great time with it  Being able to move around inside the scene gave me Virt-A-Mate vibes, but with real actresses. It brought back some of that excitement I felt when I first experienced VR porn.

It feels like a real step forward after years of mostly the same stuff, but there’s still so much friction involved in getting everything set up that I think it’ll take a lot before it becomes mainstream…

I also wonder how much money is even going into this space when the VR market as a whole seems kind of stagnant. Hopefully there are still people willing to keep pushing it forward though. Fingers crossed

VR will not have another burst of interest until we finally reach a plug and play visor that you can just put on easily. The price, bulk, and niche/hobbyist set up for viewing and integration with toys are keeping it from being more mainstream and invested in on the porn side.

We’re closer now than ever, but still have hurdles left because the next step is OF models and Fansly models doing their own VR recordings, which IS the next step because why deal with commercial garbage contracts when you can run your own site and make more money.
