Extended Video vs Looping

My recent Scripts were pretty short, going from 16-50 seconds. Ive wondered while scripting if extended videos are necessary.

What are the benefits of extended videos vs just using the video and loop it via Video Player?

Extended Videos/Scripts are just taking up more space.

There can be a delay when restarting a video, and some script players insert an artificial delay on position change ostensibly for safety purposes. Such latter delays need to be disabled to make looping video usable.

Beyond that, if there is no loop delay, there’s no real difference.

I’ve experienced the script not reloading on a loop.

When the seekbar reaches the end of the video, DeoVR with ScriptPlayer will often end the script and then loop the video but not reload the script for me.

I would get around this by placing AB markers in DeoVR in my VR session at the beginning and end of the video but making sure that my B marker is a few seconds earlier than the end of the video to prevent the script from being unloaded.

I have not tried looping videos in my VacuScripter application… I will add that to my list of things to test… totally slipped my mind until this post. (Mostly because I would generally not loop videos)

The delay when restarting the loop is the major problem.

The trick would be to keep the loop long enough in duration so that the delay doesn’t affect as much when it starts over (from the feedback I got, I’d say 1 minute is the minimum).

The start and end of the script also play a huge role. The final node should be placed a little higher or lower from the y-positioning of the first node (depending on the motion) in order to compensate for the delay. If placed in the exact same y-position, it will be affected by the delay, causing that skip feeling. The end needs to flow into the beginning. This compensation is usually within the margin of 1-5 milliseconds. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but you can feel it. It’s one of those things that have to be tuned through trial and error.

Boredom.

Yes, a lot of hypno/brainwash content out there in porn/joi/gooner land has repetition and that’s certainly a method that can work - however the best ones and the ones that trigger an effect more reliably, aren’t 30 second loops (or PMVs with lyrics…). The hypnotic/trance effect requires a balance between focus and unfocus, a thing to fixate on while other stimulation can “overload”. Too many things a person can fixate on, much harder to find that narrow grey zone. Voice over and a video that transitions quickly, with a consistent beat (binaural or otherwise) is a pretty well tested formula.

Novelty triggers dopamine. Short loops result in a diminished effect. But go too long, and attention span suffers - unless augmented in some way. Physiology differs a bit, same with preferences, but the framework is the same.

mechanically speaking - too frequently there are differences in delays when looping, between video playing and script running. A vid and script might line up perfectly the first time, but looping introduces a ~15ms (for example) delay, and after 3-4 loops you really notice it and it takes you out of the moment.

I prefer longer videos, allows for more varied content over time, plus can just scrub to different parts if bored/close to finishing.

if you use extended videos, i like you more

okay, i get the points here, especially the delay problem. But extending the same video 3x (ex 20 seconds into a minute) doesnt provide any variety.

I would argue this is not an issue. Because:

  1. Just because a clip is on an extended loop does not mean the script cannot have variety. A script is a script, and a video is just there to provide visual stimulation (plenty of audio only scripts exist (plenty of media-less scripts exist as well)).
  2. It isn’t always about variety to begin with. Just having a script on loop for an extended period of time is enough, and there are countless examples of this being the case, whether a clip loops or not.

Ah I misunderstood your post. I’ve seen scripters take a short video and extend it by looping it several times but also vary the script throughout it to keep it interesting

Extended videos, the flow is better
