Get ready to be poor

Weeks after I bought the open facial interface for the Quest 3 thinking that Valve wouldn’t release a new headset anytime soon… well now I’m gonna buy the Steam Frame headset as soon as it’s available for purchase!

I already have 2 steamdecks and an index.
I’m so hype to be able to goon wirelessly.

I am a bit mixed on this. I absolutely love Steam and Valve. I think the platform is the best we can have and Valve makes great games and hardware. Not everything was perfect, but often had new and interesting ideas.

I also love VR and waiting to upgrade from my Pico 4. Meta didn’t announce a new Quest this year, so nothing to upgrade from Meta. The Steam headset was a rumor for what feels like years now ^^ Now we finally got the announcement.

2160x2160 resolution is fine, but I was hoping for slightly higher res. My Pico 4 already has that resolution and it’s 3 years old now. No news on the PPI yet. Also, monochrome passthrough, which is a bit of a letdown. Passthrough / MR content is pretty great and will only get better. Especially for VR porn, passthrough is a nice feature. The FOV of 110 is pretty much standard. Pico 4 has 102, Quest 3 ~104. Probably not a noticeable upgrade. FOV is still lacking in (normal affordable) headsets.

The whole streaming capability though, seems amazing. Good thing they made a dedicated streaming dongle, which should make the streaming much better. Maybe even playing your 2d games in the Steam Frame is something worth doing. Depends on the comfort of the headset, which also seems to be pretty good.

It all comes down to the price. Some rumors say 1200, which I think is way too much. If this is true, I am definitely not buying. If it’s around the same price as the Quest 3 of 500, I may consider getting it. The whole Valve / Steam ecosystem is for sure something I am interested it.

Knowing valve they would make this cheaper than the index.
They also have a history of subsidizing hardware with their game sales so that’s to be seen if they continue that.

I think so too. They will likely sell it for less. They also want to get more people into VR and into their hardware / ecosystem. A 1k+ headset would not be affordable for most. I personally think it will cost 500-600.

To me, the impressive thing is the open ecosystem.
These all work with each other, but you can also use any of them with your non-Steam hardware.

Apple would never.

I predict they will meet the meta quest 3 price.

Ah, dang it, monochrome passthrough is a dealbreaker to me :frowning:

I may buy it anyway for gaming only considering it’s Valve/Steam but still… I wish for a device with the pancake lenses of the Q3, the color passthrough of the Q3, but with the OLED screen, HDR, and the eye tracking of the PSVR2. I thought this was gonna be it.

not super compelling coming from quest 3 + 6e wifi and virtual desktop if most of your time is spent in heresphere lol

Only thing I’m excited for is the new steam controller, though it looks kinda big and uncomfortable compared to the 1st one. I’ll probably get the headset if its quest 3 price.

There is reporting out there that says Valve said its will be cheaper than the Index. So, depending on what Index package they;re comparing with could mean < $499 USD (headset only), < $749 (headset and controllers), or < $999 (the whole Index kit).

It is a mid-tier headset tho, not a high-tier as the index was back then. So 1000 for the whole thing would be too much

From what I understand this is a pure upgrade from the index, though entirely wireless has some concessions that they seemed to have worked around.
I hardly use my index for VR porn anymore because of the hassle of getting it set up, and then dealing with a controller while trying to hold the handy was a pain (was before I had the hands-free setup, though mine is now broken because the official one sucks). That being said, the steamframe is more appealing to me since the whole thing is self-contained and wireless.

I think most of my problem with the VR content is that from what I seen most of it is just vanilla normal POV porn recorded with stereoscopic cameras. I find that kinda boring (my own problem, fried my own brain), but also the perspective is always weird with VR videos and you can only move your gaze within a limited window. I wish I knew of better “interactively” rendered VR content, I only really know of Citor3 but I’m not into their brand of bondage, and I’m also not really interested in creating sex scenes in VaM (just makes me feel like I’m 12 and playing garrysmod)

In one of the hands-on reaction videos that I watched, they said they’d been told that Valve was hoping to keep the price of the frame under $1000 but that they couldn’t commit to it yet.
So presumably the 2TB model will be the best part of 1000 at least, even if the 512gb model costs a bit less.

I imagine that the price of memory/ssds skyrocketing currently isn’t helping. Things like the dongle-that-is-a-router and dual wifi radios (7 + 6e), big battery and such probably all add to the cost as well.

On a related note, meta are rumoured to sell the quest at little to no profit or possibly even a small loss, on the assumption that they will make it up in store sales, whereas valve don’t strike me as a company to do that.

But we’ll see for sure next year.

This has to be priced to compete with the quest. Too much of it is just manufactured to that price point. They cheaped out with monochrome cameras, with the screens in both resolution and technology, and I’m sure you’ll find more compromises to keep it in that competitive range. Despite all the cuts they likely made to get the dongle in, It will still likely dominate the quest in games, and match it for porn consumption. But owning a quest3 myself the only thing I see that makes me consider it would be the form factor.

I if it will be 500 im buying it maybe 2 to 3 months after release because on launch day it can have some kinks that still need some work or maybe i would consider buying it on releas day if those kinks would only be software one

The Quest does have the native SteamLink app, which makes it really easy to jump in SteamVR from the Quest. It still relies on your wifi though.
