Does anyone have a setup for mounting the handy 2 while lying down? I need a way to use the device without relying on a table to clamp onto. Don’t have heavy duty tools like saws on hand either so preferrably the parts are available on a site like amazon and you just assemble them.
This works great for my Handy 1 but from what I’ve seen the Handy 2 is entirely different beast. I’m just waiting for the new mount they are finalizing that will work perfectly with the Handy 2 Pro
I made a waist mounted rig when I got my H2P, using an Insta360 back bar waist strap and a couple Mid49-branded Universal Speedball mounts to allow for easy positioning, that tightens down well so it doesn’t move when you don’t want it to. It did require some optimizing, but it works really well now. You don’t need the Back Strap I got, there are other similar options out there that are cheaper. I posted it in the Ohdoki/Handy Discord server when the H2P first came out. I could take some photos later and post them here if you like. Ohdoki did actually announce an official product that is essentially a copy of what I made, at their CES booth this year. I like to think they used mine as inspiration for their own, but who knows. It might be worth waiting for that if you truly don’t want to fiddle around with anything yourself.
Buy any camera tripod with a reversible center column. If you’re into photography you may have one already, like this
Buy a cheap ball head with an Arca Swiss style quick release plate:
Initial Setup: Screw the quick release plate to the Handy 2 (it will stay permanently attached). Screw the ball head to the tripod center column (it will stay permanently attached). Put the tripod center column so the tripod head is underneath the tripod’s three legs.
To use:
- Grab your tripod, spread the tripod legs wide enough so you can slide underneath it and put it on your mattress
- Slide underneath it. One tripod leg goes between your legs, the other two are either side of your torso
- Adjust the center column to the right height
- Attach the Handy to the tripod head using the quick release plate
That’s it. This setup is quick to use and very stable. The tripod costs some money though if you don’t have one already.
EDIT: Here’s a picture with the tripod column inverted for a better idea of how it works
I can attest to this working fantastically. I use it for VR while just lying down in bed, though I don’t have a 3D printer so I just opted to buy it directly from here (linked on the aforementioned page).
Note the instructions, as you will also need to buy (verbatim as per the link, both available on Amazon, and including the exact things I purchased):
- 2x D Shaft D-ring 1/4" Mounting Screws (example, though I had to cut the plastic handle bits with scissors as they wouldn’t fit)
- 1-2x Tactical duty belts - 2" / 50mm wide, Velcro backed, with quick release buckles (example, I bought two as recommended for it to stay secured - having only one might work, but it’ll shift around more and that’s not a risk I’m willing to take)
Assembly only required a flathead screwdriver, and it’s incredibly convenient to slip off and on as it’s basically just a belt.
Thanks, this seems like the simplest solution. Will try it!
