[Help] UID is now "NOTEST" after update failure - Any other reset methods?

Hi everyone, I need some technical advice for my new Handy 1.

[Initial Setup - Successful] I received the device today and followed the setup process precisely:

  1. I first downloaded the ‘Handyverse’ app, but it said it was not supported.
  2. So I installed the ‘HandyOnboarding’ app as instructed.
  3. When I plugged in the power, the LED was Green.
  4. I pressed the ‘-’ button, and the LED changed to Blue.
  5. The app showed “found a device”, and when I clicked connect, it was successful and the LED turned Purple.
  6. At this stage, the UID field showed “device with legacy FW3”. I thought this was my Connection Key.

[Update Failure & Error Messages] I started the Firmware Update, but it failed at around 60-70%. After the failure, the LED is now Blue. The app can find the device, but when I try to connect, I get these Yellow error messages:

  • “Connection canceled”
  • “Please try again, device not set”

[Manual Reset Attempt - Correct Procedure] Because the firmware seemed to be corrupted and the device was unusable, I attempted a manual factory reset:

  1. I unplugged the power cord from the device.
  2. I held down both the Up and Down arrow buttons simultaneously.
  3. While keeping the buttons pressed, I plugged the power cord back in.
  • The LED flashed in a rainbow pattern for several minutes.
  • It eventually returned to blinking blue, but the UID has now changed to “NOTEST”.
  • I still get the same “Connection canceled” and “device not set” errors.

[My Questions]

  1. Is there any other button combination I should try to get out of this “NOTEST” status?
  2. Was “device with legacy FW3” actually my Connection Key, or was the device already in an abnormal state?
  3. How can I resolve the “device not set” error when I can’t even get past the connection screen?

I’ve already emailed support, but I wanted to check here for any manual fixes. (I have screenshots, but the system is blocking my links).

Hi. Reach out to support: contact@thehandy.com

Hey. Any news here? Got the same problem and Ive already waited for 48hrs for support. Looking for a quick fix.

Hey! I finally heard back from them on Jan 19th, 20:19 UTC.

They confirmed it’s a hardware issue and offered to replace my device, though I have to return the faulty one first. It seems their support team is most active between 18:30 and 20:00 UTC. Since you’ve been waiting for 48 hours, you’ll probably get the same replacement offer in their next active window. Check your mail around that time!

Same thing happened to me. Kinda sucks buying it brand new and it saying it already needing an update and that just breaks it.

Glad to see I’m not the only one.

I’m currently in the ‘waiting game’ with support.
They told me to bear with them for the shipping process, but it’s taking much longer than expected.

In my case, I suspect the issue was triggered by receiving a phone call during the update. According to someone who has purchased multiple Handy units, they mentioned that more than half of the devices encounter firmware issues.

According to comments from other users, updating via the onboarding app pushes you to version 4.0, which has compatibility issues with programs like Stash. They say it’s better to stay on version 3.x using Handyverse. So I installed the Handyverse mobile app, but I couldn’t even use it. When I launch it, it just tells me to install the Handy Onboarding app, so it’s completely unusable. I haven’t even been able to get that far anyway—because my device is already broken. (I think maybe that ‘Handyverse’ they mentioned is a website?)

While some were lucky enough to stay connected and fix it by downgrading, my device is completely unresponsive and won’t establish any connection.
I haven’t been able to use it for a week now. I hope yours gets resolved soon!

Hi everyone, this is for Russia only. Moscow has decided to stop masturbating to Russians, so Handy won’t update, only via a VPN hotspot. It’s basically the same as the Quest 3-2 VR headset. Even support doesn’t understand why Handy isn’t updating.

The replacement process has finally been finalized today. I have already shipped the defective Handy unit back to your headquarters, and I understand that the new replacement unit is now ready for shipment.
