ok so i had this idea, i would love to be able to preserve memories of my family inside VR, so that when the day comes and they are no longer here, i can pop a headset on and have them right there again
so my question is, does any of you no of any good VR cameras, 180/360 whatever,
my plan is to basically have whatever VR Cam i can put on a tripod in my living room and basically film us all together at christmas and birthdays and stuff, is this idea achievable? i think it would be an amazing thing to do like i said to strap on my headset and be back in a room with my mum and dad right there again when they no longer are
any advice on best cameras to use with this project would be massivly appreciated
This is basically what Apple is going for with its ‘spatial videos’ and photos:
If you’ve got an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, you’ve already got a (limited) stereoscopic camera in your phone:
Spatial video and photos are already viewable natively on Meta Quest headsets, so you don’t need an expensive Apple Vision Pro to view them:
Watch a demo here if you have a Quest:
Sure, there are much higher quality solutions – you could rent (at a few hundred a day) a Z CAM K1 Pro or a Canon R7 if you want pro-level production – but you’ll need pro video skills and associated processing pipeline, versus a phone you’ll already have it in your pocket which won’t be weird to record with and share with family and friends. So that’s the appeal, even if the VR stereo image is quite limited. Maybe give the phone a go and see how it goes?
thanks for the reply, this is something i will certainly give a try, but what im really looking for is a true VR180 degree or 360 degree camera, spatial is apparently like a 3D video, but i want these vids to be a true VR experience, like when you watch VR porn, the people are literally right in the room with you, thats what im after
Hey I don’t have a recommendation for the technical implementation today, but I recently saw a video about what will probably be possible in a few years. The Spatial Video thing from Apple is a first step in this direction and there is a lot of research going on. This video is definitely quite interesting, although it doesn’t directly help with your question.
yeah i did try to check that out but you need a facebook account which i deleted once it was no longer a requirement to use a quest lol dammit
ive been looking at an insta360 X4 camera, im thinking if i got one and put it on a tripod and placed it in the middle of my living room it would record family occasions and i could watch them back on a VR headset and at least have SOME immersion right?
The insta360 has a single lens so it’s mono 360 degrees. Sure, the pictures and video they produce are kinda cool, but they’re not immersive at all. To be even remotely immersive, you need a dual lens camera.
Sadly I think all the consumer cameras that shoot dual lens VR capable video have been discontinued, probably because it’s a really niche thing that’s only watchable with a VR headset? So Apple’s way is pretty much the only way for now unless you want to go high end.
thanks a ton for that video download link, i tried watching it on deovr at first but it was just 2D so i downloaded a video player (4x something) that apparently plays spatial videos and when i watched the clip in that it was much more of a 3D effect so i assume that was the correct viewing method, might be worth grabbing an iphone 15 and using this method until proper VR cameras are more standard which they surely will be eventually
thank you for all the info though @Mongoose very much appreciate the help
Glad I could help. Just make sure you get a 15 Pro (or a regular 16 or 16 Pro / Pro Max) as the regular 15 doesn’t record spatial videos. Good luck with the project!
