Never give up, never stop. Maybe slow it down a bit, but don’t stop. Once you stop, it’s hard to get back in. Slowing it down a bit, then slowly get back into, is much easier.

And that’s why you should never stop.

Never heard of that app, interesting. Maybe a good alternative.

From what i can see at first glance, Stoat CAN be self-hosted but the self-hosted public version seems to be out-of-date with the centralized service and missing some features ATM including voice chats (see this PR and this one for instance). They DO have a repo for the backend itself but running this would require running the server “the old fashioned way” (ie. without it running inside a container, the docker stack inside this repo is just third party stuff like database, mail servers, etc.) and maintenance would be more painful.
Again this is just a quick glance on my end and requires more careful research from others, but considering the initial issue comes from a centralized platform doing whatever they want… Wait and see.
I imagine that they are perfectly aware (as you shown in your screenshots @VladTheImplier lmao) of the attention they are getting and this might get streamlined very soon.

I hate containers anyway. I run my services like a man. using init.

Godspeed, you’re braver than me for that (at least on my personal stacks, at work i’d say it’s 50/50)

I’m trying Element (Matrix), rn and it looks good, it has voice chats with screen share, wich is what I am looking for to play with my friends.

I have used Revo… I mean Stout before but i dont see an option to share video yet.

It occurs to me that the glossing over of data breaches and privacy leaks as an issue… Might be intentional.

I think there is a possibility this is performative “close barn doors after horses escaped”, as we’re seeing it across so many platforms and so many countries. Like, there have been enough data breaches and personal identities connected to IP and MAC addresses over time, and enough data points, that it’s all already out. That the totality of NSFW internet is compromised already - VPN, no VPN, data from providers, site tracking/cookies, none of it has seen real protection.

So may as well make it look like something’s been done, under the guise of “save the children”, while our data can be packaged up and sold around the world to anyone, with less scrutiny.

Snowden told us all about the NSA databanks long ago, a lot of us suspected as much anyway in advance. If you think the 5Eyes don’t all have their own forts of every byte of digital traffic and are trying to feed it into Palatnir and similar in order to use it, then hey, wake up.

In Minnesota, they have been using the drama of public snatchings and state sponsored terrorism as a smokescreen for pre-dawn raids, disappearing protestors identified by facial recognition tech and cross ref’d with social media/internet traffic.

I think having one setup as a fail-safe yes. But I think we wait and see what actually plays out here first, rather than reacting impulsively.

This is why IRC should never have gone the way of the dodo.

I have already been age restricted on discord for more than a week now. The eroscript discord is 100% age restricted for me.

I actually don’t think this would be an impulsive reaction. I don’t like discord, what they stand for or how they behave. I think this is just a wake up call that action needs to be taken.

They’re going to enforce the restrictions and I won’t stick around for it. Not only will I not register for the age verification, I will stop using discord.

While I recognize the sentiment and definitely agree, not all children have parents and we should rely on some form of legislation/enforcement. Dystopian surveillance state is not the way we accomplish that.

Just woke up and saw this news. Damn… gotta start looking for alternatives just like I did with Mega to Pixeldrain.

The constant AI enshittification of all services will continue until moral improves.

Well done Discord. Just permanantly shot yourself in the foot and given telegram more legs

Extremely sad news for the state of the internet overall.

Telegram seems like a viable option for hosting and managing a community. You can have the main server setup, and then sort all the subtopics (channels) by using their “Topics” feature, where you can set roles and posting permissions per-topic. No in-depth role control like in discord - in telegram it basically boils down to: admin/mod/member. But it’s a start. I know I’m looking into it if/when Discord crumbles.

It never was.

Anytime the government is saying its to protect kids, or to prevent terrorism, its a red flag. The reason is that those arguments are very easy to defend “why would you be against it? are you an abuser/terrorist?”. Any counter you give then can just be countered by “you are just hiding the fact you are an abuser/terrorist”.
For this reason, the only valid counter would be to instantly say: mass surveilance for enslaving the people like china’s scoring system. It instantly makes them sound bad as well.
Its just that in politics and media almost nobody says that, because they are already part of the system. They benefit if most people remain poor.

But yeah,
Its about monitoring citizens, to ensure that the potentialy problematic people can be purged from society as early as possible. Silencing any criticism.

The worst of this all is: by the time it got too far, you cant act anymore. Good luck overthrowing a government with such strong influence. Dictators would be jaleous. China already showed its severe downsides from such systems: No control of your own life, and usualy a very depressing one. But only if you arent rich (because if rich, you enslave the people).

If its not discord doing this step, the next platform will, or the one after. By just repeatedly pushing it, at some point people give in. Which is exactly what they want.
And even if discord would refuse now, they will just push another platform through propaganda as being the ‘next thing’. It just takes time.

Its worth to remember a certain quote:
The diffirence between a conspiracy theory and reality is measured in time.

And its scary how much the time between theory and reality has shortened the past decades.

I see a dystopian future, mixed with idiocracy.
Because even if we are enslaved by then, because technology took over, we wont have much left to do except consuming ‘entertainment’ until death. There probably will be some work to do, but due to high competition, the payment is going to be horrible. So most people will end up dying early because of stress.
And in the meantime the rich stay rich, because they now have full control over society.
The only thing that would stop this is a revolution, which then is caused by the lowest tier of rich people (enough money to buy an army of peasants who are bored already anyway, and would love to see the system break).

I just hope my prediction is going to take long enough so i dont see any of it.

Stinkmeaner hates enshittification.

Ya don’t say? Is it truly ever?

It’s called McCarthyism only this time it isn’t just one guy.
