Hi team, its less than a month until (hopefully) my Handy 2 Pro gets despatched. I’m starting to think about handfree desk mounts…
I’m looking for budget (but functioning) options for a discrete mount for my desk that I can easily set up and remove. For height adjustment, i also have the flexibility of having a standup desk so have a bit more flexibility than most.
I was looking at something a little bit like this - seeking some input. The threads seem to match. Not sure if the 1.5kg load limit will be suitable though. The engineer in me thinks this will be fairly stiff though and shouldn’t shake around too much when compared with something with 'support rods.
Look forward to your feedback.
PS - I’m not very interested in the genuine option unless I really have to. USD/AUD exchange rate plus postage is a real killer.
PPS - I’ve seen the stanley vice option with the 3d printed gizmo. Seems like a great solution, again trying to keep it low cost (and I don’t have a 3d printer).
Certainly not cheap but I use this (based in US, not AU) and it holds it pretty well. Place a towel on your bed, put the Joby down with a leg pointed to go up your back and each other leg under your own, an additional towel as cushioning, lay down while putting one end underneath pointing up your back and the other two under each leg when laying down with a pillow on both sides with a weighted blanket. This does involve pointing the handy in the opposite direction of the intended usage so you do need to be careful of pinching when you’re starting out.
Of course I bought it originally for the Handy 1 and used a camera ring mount to hold the actual Handy1. Cant really use the ring mount for the Handy 2 Pro so I experimented.
Tried the Stanley Vise – it worked but it was kind of trashy-looking and very slightly annoying to position correctly when I mount/dismount from my desk.
Then I bought a longer magic arm so I could use my beefy C-clamp and still reach the mounting holes low down on the H2Pro. That thing shifted so much (in every possible direction) that was constantly having to readjust it.
Finally, I got the H2Pro firmware upgraded and access to the flip setting. Flipped the H2Pro upside down and just went back to my original clamp and short magic arm. Pretty damn solid except the rubber coating of the H2Pro fucks with the magic arm mount a little causing a tiny wiggle.
I found this Stand and Camera Mount in another thread. I have also printed other mounts for the Handy 2 from other designers, but decided to just build my own sleek version of a recent STL model based on another forum member’s design.
NOTE: I use 100% fill and the “Tree” style printing supports. This thing is STRONG. Most modern printers will print this in about 1-3 hours.
The whole setup has a quick release, built in Tilt, Pan, and Swivel, so H2 orientation can be reversed, spun, and reconfigured to your liking, and even clamped in any fashion on a desk, or rest under your legs on a bed, chair, whatever:
If mean the 3D model? You can just download the .stl file linked in my post. If you don’t have a printer but know someone who does, it’s a pretty innocent named file and you could tell them you need it for some camera or lighting equipment.
The swivel arm that holds the VESA mount is included with the stand. The Amazon link should have more pictures of it.
But to be honest I’m not a fan of the way the attachment screws work. Don’t get me wrong, once you get it attached and the knurled knobs locked down its great. But fucking with tiny Allen wrenches and pliers is annoying.
I don’t use reddit, but please feel free to share this and the file where ever you like. It’s free for everyone to download, modify, and use however they like.
