Hi, first of all, sorry, I don’t speak English, I’m using a translator.
Today, while using my The Handy, I heard a strange noise. It seems like the piece that holds the sleeve is loose; it hasn’t fallen or been hit. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?
My The Handy is two weeks old, and I’m going to send an email to claim under warranty. But I’d like to know if anyone else has had the same problem.
That doesn’t look broken from what I’m seeing there in the video. The “carrier” has to slide on two metal rods and there’s a little bit of movement possible just like the video shows.
I’d like to see tighter tolerances between the rods and the carrier, but it’s plastic rubbing (hopefully lubricated and smoothly rubbing) on those two guide rods that are offset around 2 inches off center. The looseness of that carrier contributes to a tap noise/vibration as the carrier changes directions sometimes.
At that end of the carrier that you are wiggling, you have the most leverage/distance from the “bearing” surfaces and farthest from the screwnut as well. The relatively small amount movement shown in the video seems typical and can get worse with use I believe.
I’ve tried warming and squeezing the lower guide holes of the carrier to make them oval /and therefore tighter on the rods but I either didn’t do it enough or they wore quicker afterwards. It hasn’t made a lot of difference.
I’ve had some luck placing a piece of Velcro ON the backside of that carrier against the case slot area so that the Velcro holds the carrier away from the case a bit. It helps most of the time but rubs off the satin finish in that area over time too.
It’s quieter though.
I’m not familiar enough with the materials inside a Handy to know for sure how to improve that carrier mechanism or if it would last as long if materials were substituted. Some soft metal sleeves to rub against the metal rods could help, but the possibility of lots of wear and insufficient lubrication might be the result.
At a particular price point and low repair rate goal, the plastic used might be just right.
Some movement on that end of the slider is normal. The attachment of the slider onto the lead screw is actually above the opposite end. What I see in the video is normal flex of the slider. If you try to move the top of the slider it should not have that much movement.
There is a slider offset so the T8 nut and all the slider attachment points are above the slider. The offset is there so that there is room for the motor in the bottom of the H1 and the slider can go down further so the attached sleeve will reach near the bottom of the machine.
Based on the amount of movement, I suspect the bottom of the device has been grinding.
I have 2 H1s and in both of them, I had to stick a thin harder plastic in the bottom where the motor is to prevent the grinding from damaging the handy. It also solved some noise it was making.
