Hi total newbie here, I’m about to order the parts for building an OSR2 but can’t decide what servos to use.
I’m considering between the DS3235 SG ($10 each) and the 9imod DS35MG ($22 each).
I’m from 3d world country so can’t really go higher than those $22 for servos, but would appreciate recommendations.
Not sure what the differences really are other than the noise (noise it’s not really an issue), gonna use the device with a Fleshlight Girls sleeve.
Need help to decide which ones to use please!
Recommendations for better servos in that price range will also be very appreciated!
I used both 9imod and DS, but 25kg variants. I had some issues with DS during the initial setup (part where the metal horn should be in neutral? position). Arms weren’t aligned. I had to edit the code to adjust arms. But I’m not sure if this is something to worry about or just normal thing in this price range.
Arm alignment is probably more about the servo horn than the servo. With cheap servo horns, the grooves have no consistent alignment. The same could be true with cheap servos, but I can’t say for sure. Using higher quality servo horns, I’ve found consistent alignment, not to mention a lack of servo horn breakage, which happens with the cheap ones after a lot of fast script playing.
This is the servo horn I use. I bought them over five years ago on Amazon for my initial OSR2 build, but didn’t use them right away, because I noticed too late that the shape was wrong for the arms. After breaking several normal servo horns, I used Blender to modify the servo arms to fit the Axial ones between three and four years ago now, I think. They haven’t broken once since. The wider shoulder no doubt plays a big part in that. I’ll attach my modified arm in case you want to give it a try.
Those are basically what I use, they’re cheap and do the job but lower quality than the ones @Thanny posted.
Also, I’ve only used the DS servos and I didn’t really enjoy them and they are very loud. They break quite easily compared to higher quality servos and I found that over time I was actually spending more by using them. I get that it’s a pretty big upfront investment for higher quality servos which isn’t always practical.
