Quest 3 is pretty cool even for Non-VR Content! (1080p, 4k vids, etc.)

Just picked up a Quest 3 recently.
I tried a different VR headset before, the HP Reverb G2, and that thing was all sorts of jank for me. Wasn’t really able to get it properly focused or anything, and it just felt like looking through a telescope.
The Quest 3 is surprisingly crisp and clear. I’ve still gotta get some custom lenses to use it without glasses.

So, you can basically use Virtual Desktop to stream your computer screen over, and it blows up the resolution to like 4k, and you’re basically able to scale everything up, so it feels like you’re sitting right in front of an 85" TV.

I think I’ve gotta figure out a way to virtually increase the resolution to be higher (monitor is 1600p, but the Quest resolution is 4k), but even with the way I’m doing it now, everything is quote sharp. I use Virtual Desktop with the Syncplayer, and you can tilt your head to focus on different parts of the videos. You can add the screen curve as well, and can easily move around your desktop screen in 3D space. You can use a button to re-center your location.

I use one of those custom strap things with the battery pack, and that makes it quite comfortable.

You don’t really need more than the 128GB, and the Virtual Desktop streaming is extremely crisp (it has some GPU acceleration stuff), so you’re not missing out by using it standalone without wires. Only needs like 20mbps, and you can stream at 120fps. For audio sync, I think you can probably wire in some earbuds to the Quest3, but I’m just kinda used to the bluetooth delay with my setup.

Definitely grab one if you catch a Black Friday sale. You can return it to @mazon by Jan31 if you don’t like it, and many other stores will take returns at least a week or two into January.

Seconded! The Q3 is a wonderful media player in general. I like how it blanks out all distractions around you, and it’s THE BEST when on long flights or train rides.

I’ve been thinking about “upgrading” to the Quest 3 for some time now.
I already own the Pico 4 and basically use it the same way (Virtual Desktop).
Never had a non-VR session since then.

I do wonder if switching/upgrading to the Quest 3 would be worth it though.

Oh right, I can also recommend the Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds for even better immersion. They’re pricey but almost entirely cancel out the noise from the Handy.

Mine arrived today and I’m horribly disappointed. I’m slightly short-sighted, and I figured it wouldn’t be any issue since the screens are literally 2-5 cm in front of the eyes.
Yet, everything is completely blurry without glasses. And the glasses don’t fit under there properly, not even with the adjustment is provides for depth. I guess I’ll have to return it, as it’s unusable this way. Just wondering what you mean about custom lenses?

Prescription lenses are a game-changer. I personally got mine from VR-Rock and have had no issues, but everything I read says that all the brands are perfectly fine.

You definitely have to try these out:
Custom strap - adds more comfort, and you can use the Quest without the black eyemask piece in the front - Amazon.com
It adds extra comfort to the back, better spacing adjustment to the front.

And these custom lenses run about $50

I didn’t like it at all with glasses with the Quest3 stock setup, especially because my main glasses are pretty big. I have to switch to my smaller glasses for comfort with the Quest 3. That’s why I already purchased some lenses.

Zenni has a free return policy as well if you’re not satisfied, as well as the stuff on Amazon of course. I’m excited to get mine.

Another thing you can do is add some adjustment to the front piece:

You can pull this entire plastic front piece that he’s adjusting here, and then press the little side notches, and the pieces are telescopic so that you can adjust it. It’s good for glasses so that it doesn’t press them hard against your face.

Thanks for your reply. After hours of searching I found my existing glasses prescription and now ordered lenses from Zenni.

I already got a similar Elite Strap with battery in the back for extended uptime and balanced weight distribution. Not sure which black eyemask piece you’re referring to. My headset has fabric coated padding in the front, which does not seem to be removable. Comfort is fine without glasses, so I’ll just wait for the lenses to arrive and hopefully I’ll be ready to go.

Thanks for the hint, but I already tried that to no avail. The problem is that my glasses are too wide for the headset.

Different question, which is the preferred way to playback media on the Quest 3? I found another thread that was written at the time when Quest 2 was state of the art and later on it says that the info is outdated.
I know of 4 possible ways
-play on PC, stream to glasses via AirLink
-play on PC, Link cable
-play on Quest (copy file to headset)
-play on Quest (from PC or NAS network share)

Just wondering which is best. So far I’m leaning towards Link cable, as I’m seated while watching, so the cable does not bother and the uptime is infinite as the headset is also charged at the same time.

I just use Virtual Desktop for now, since I can use the Syncplayer that way, and it streams my desktop. I’m not really into VR videos specifically.
