I wanted to create a thread about the Stream Frame. I am eagerly awaiting the release announcement, which hopefully is announced soon. Since my Pico 4 broke, doesn’t charge anymore, I can’t wait to get into VR again. Steam Frame seems very interesting with all the specs. Though, passthrough isn’t that great, because it has no color passthrough. Rest of the specs are looking cool and I think Steam Frame has potential to also play your 2d games in VR. Like as in you sit in some virtual environment and you play the 2d games on a big screen.
I will definitely use the Steam Frame for VR porn content. The screen should be good, though it’s not a massive upgrade over the other headsets like Pico or Quest.
I hope the announcement is soon and the price is not in the 1k range, rather in the 500 - 700 range. If it’s in this range, it’s definitely an instant buy for me - as long as the servers are stable ^^ We already saw when the Steam Controller released, that the servers struggle.
Are you getting the Steam Frame or are you happy with your current setup?
I am so hype for steam frame you have no idea. I love my valve index, but gooning in the livingroom is kinda cringe. I can already imagine lying in bed with steam controller and handy mounted in bed playing integrated games.
I also really hype for the modding community. I have made some custom tools for myself on my steamdeck and nixos w/ gamescope that would be killer in VR.
I’m also really hype for no more tether or lighthouse tracking.
Another huge thing for me is I’m still stuck on windows for VR gaming, but with the steam frame being out and polished I can finally abandon that POS OS.
I will gladly shell out whatever it costs. When I have the space, me and the wife can have fun in VR together (in both senses of the word)
Same here. My Index is on it’s second cable (despite my treadmill) and I am getting the tale tale signs of it’s demise. There are red and white flickering pixels and occasional audio pops. I pray to Gabe for an announcement. My concern if there will be a long pre-order or “reserve your spot” and the actual hardware in hand.
I was wondering about the potential for micro oled in future iterations. Like how they had LCD for steam deck and later had the upgraded screen.
You might not be aware, but the flat2vr gaming community has an awesome discord. There is a UEVR tool that adds a native VR camera to Unreal Engine games. There are mods for more integration like 6dof motion controller support.
How they’re handling the orders for the controller to fight the scalping is interesting. Cause servers went down due to high volume of demand and all of the scalpers showing up and using bots to buy out the controller. But from what I understand, now for the controller everyone can just queue up and they’ll eventually get to you.
Hopefully this system also works for the Steam Frame because there was definitely a fear of this exact same thing re:scalpers happening with it.
Yeah they confirmed they will use the same queue system for the release of both the steam frame and steam machine.
From my understanding for you to be able to even join the queue, you account needs to have valid purchases made in the steam market before 27 April 2026, and each account can only buy a single unit. Sounds like a pretty good system to fight against the scalpers, it doesn’t outright entirely solve the problem but it hinders and minimizes it enough for the general public to be able to purchase the equipment normally.
This is currently the best system that doesn’t require you needing to upload ID or some shit.
Its like this or what Japan does where you enter everyone into a gacha/lottery for the chance to buy something and then you have to confirm its you(when you win) and then the item is locked to your ID.
I remember when the steamdeck came out they did the same thing to prevent scalpers. I was surprised when they didn’t initially do that with the steam controller.
Still have my limited edition oled and my wife got the hand me down Q3 pre-order
I hope they start the reservation part soon. I think it shouldn’t take thaaat long anymore. VoodooVR, a VR hardware reviewer, already received a unit and made a video. But Valve asked him to take it down, so he took it down.
I also think the reservation is the best way.
I know about the flat2vr community, but never played any game that got a VR mod. I always wanted to try some, but never was able to and too lazy to set it up ^^
I am looking forward playing the normal games in a virtual environment. Sitting on the couch, using the Steam Controller and being in a completely different world. I think this could be cool.
But I also would like to play some VR games again. Favorite one is H3VR and a sequel has been announced as well. I do miss a banger game like Half Life Alyx though.
I’m not really hyped for this product considering it’s specs a quest 3 would be better and in my opinion you are paying hundreds more for a device that isn’t tied to facebook.
The fact that it doesn’t OLED screens is an immediate turn off for me, since I know for a fact it won’t look as good as the PSVR2. I hope to be proven wrong by some miraculous LCD technology and their pancakes lenses, though.
I’ll still be getting it day one, since maybe it’ll be a good device to suggest to my community, especially for those who prefer independent-from-PC play.
Curious to see how the user experience differs from the Quest 3. I could not care less about Meta’s software ecosystem and only ever use it as a PCVR launcher.
My current bane with it is that I have to use ICS with a Wifi6 router due to the layout of my house. ICS has to be toggled off and on everytime my PC restarts and I haven’t had success at keeping it persistent. So I’m interested in Frame’s dongle and if it can cut down the hassle and hardware required for pcvr streaming.
Lacking colored passthrough might actually be a downside now that I have tried VaM with passthrough on.
This is unfortunate they didn’t got for OLED. But that’s probably due to the price. They want to be competitive with Meta. OLED would have probably increased the price too much. But maybe they do an OLED version later.
The dongle is a really interesting choice. I am curious to see how it will play out. Steam Link itself already is huge improvement. With my Pico 4, I used Virtual Desktop, but it always had some lag spikes. Rhythm games like Beat Saber or Ragnarock where pretty much unplayable. But Steam Link worked perfect, no lag at all. With the dongle, it will probably even better.
I personally think the 2 main huge selling points is this will be the first standalone headset that will be able to play both PCVR and android based games, and that it’s a completely open platform.
Me and the wife have been wanting neko atsume but it’s only available for quest. Once we can get it for steam frame ( yar har ) the android emulator should be able to play it.
Also since it’s completely open I can hack away at it for many things. Imagine someone building a plugin for point tracking into the systemd service and toggling handy sync on and off and you get any VR content to handy integration. THAT is the power of open platforms.
Oh yes, I always forget the Steam Fame is an open Plattform. People could mod color passthrough in or something different like you said. I am already looking forward what is coming and what people make it. Many like Steam / Steam hardware because of this. I recently got the Steam Controller and Valve delivers when it comes to hardware. I am confident they will give us the same quality with the Steam Frame.
You were probably the last person here I would expect to play something like this ^^ Looks cute. Cat + VR is a lovely combo.
I very much love cats. I had a ragdoll mix named Megatron who passed a couple years ago. Loved that cat. I now have the most orange cat I’ve ever seen in my life. The wife named him Junimo (after the stardew valley spirits).
Ragdolls are beautiful. Pure cats. Elegant, beautiful, perfect fur, stunning eyes.
I have two cats as well. My most loyal companions. I would never swap them out for any human. I often prefer the company of my cats to humans tbh ^^
I’m looking forward to the Steam Frame and will probably get one. I don’t think they can go too wild on the price given that the hardware is pretty comparable to the Meta Quest 3. But once any early bugs are ironed out I think it should be a better software experience (especially streaming from PC) and a much more open platform. That probably justifies a bit of a premium, but if Valve are looking for double the price, I don’t think they’ll sell too many.
I’ll personally pay a premium to not have to deal with Meta, since I had an old Oculus Go and had loads of account related problems with that (banning my account multiple times for no reason, not sending recovery emails, useless support). So I didn’t bother with any of their more modern devices since.
