Trying to build a better hands-free mount for The Handy - looking for real-world feedback

I’m working on a small hands-free mount prototype for The Handy and similar devices. I’m still early in the design process, so I’m not trying to make a sales post here. I’m mainly trying to understand what actually fails in real setups.

From my own testing, the weak point doesn’t seem to be The Handy itself. It’s usually the mount: twisting, wobble, sleeve alignment drifting, or the whole setup slowly moving out of position.

Right now I’m experimenting with a shorter braced structure instead of a long magic-arm style setup, plus rubber/TPU contact pads and an adjustable guide to help keep the sleeve aligned.

For people who have used hands-free setups with scripts/VR:

  • what usually becomes annoying first?
  • does the sleeve drift out of alignment over time?
  • do desk mounts work well enough, or is body/base stabilization more useful?
  • are there other devices besides The Handy that would be worth testing for fit?

All handsfree setups that doesn’t allow you to get out of it quick and easy mid session to re-lube is a no go for my part. This seems like a hassle to get out of.

An other potential issue might be that the Handy is located below the sleeve. That means that lube will drip down into the Handy mechanical parts.

Not to mention with that position, I still recall the one story with the user who got his ball skin caught in the gap.

The quick exit / re-lube point makes sense. I was mainly focused on stability and sleeve alignment, but if the user cannot get out of the setup quickly mid-session, the design is not practical. I’ll add quick-release / fast-open access as a design requirement, not just a convenience feature.

The lube dripping issue is also a good catch. I need to avoid placing the Handy directly under the sleeve path without some kind of drip gap, shield, or orientation change. That is probably something I should test with real lube, not just dry mechanical testing.

The pinch / gap safety issue is important too. I’ll review the contact area and make sure there are no narrow exposed gaps near the body side. Rounded edges and soft covers are not enough if the structure creates a trap point.

So from this thread, my next prototype checklist is now:

  • quick exit for re-lube
  • no narrow pinch gaps near the body
  • lube drip protection / safer device orientation
  • sleeve alignment over longer sessions
  • less hassle getting in and out
