What is the benefit of auto-closing topics?

would you reconsider the 90day topic auto-close behavior? i don’t really see a benefit.

for example:

this topic has build tips for OFS on macOS. it’s better to have all of that consolidated instead of starting a new topic to continue the discussion.

i think there are upsides to rewriting big threads like this as a howto that can be maintained

i agree, but i do believe that replying to existing topics is appropriate in a lot of cases, and i don’t see that specific example as a reason to auto-close.

i think that auto-close can make sense for some communities or categories, but i am unsure of the benefit here. perhaps there is one that i am missing?

There are benefits in cases where we don’t want certain topics to drag on or go off topic.
It’s also useful to set time limits for certain topics that don’t get replies.
makes them easy targets for archival.
I do think we should more intelligently decide when to have auto closing topics.
we can review and re-implement.

I re-opened the topic (but I leave the timer in place).

Auto-close applies only for Script Requests and Help topics. The timer accelerates if the op marked an answer as the solution.

I think it can be beneficial. A lot of Help threads have to do with a personal encounter and people are responding to that specific scenario. If it’s about a general topic it deserves a better category. You may also continue the discussion in other categories simply by linking to them.
