I couldn’t think of a better title for this as I have only run into this issue once as far as I can recall and only recently. I was editing a script and ran into a situation where I changed a part of the script to what I thought better matched the action, however upon testing the script I thought the feel then felt off/worse than the original. https://discuss.eroscripts.com/t/hajimete-no-hitozuma-3/50385
Below you can see the scene and the 2 different scripts. The top one follows the up/down of the female and the bottom follows the action of the male with a slight bump (this was edited as my original version had a larger bump) at the bottom when the female comes down.
In testing this though I thought the simpler up/down script felt more in line with what my eyes were watching and less disconnected. This surprised me because I had never run into a situation where scripting the action felt so off.
Maybe it was just bad scripting on my part but I would like the thoughts of some other scripters if you will. What would you all have done for something like this?
In my opinion, the timing is what’s most crucial, ie upstroke during an up motion, downstroke during a down motion. The baseline is just having clean lines to make the triangles for the up and down cause thats the minimum required. Adding bounces, vibes etc is up to taste.
You sort of have to account for the mechanical limitations of the machine, as well as the limitations of the video ie the animation. As long as its timed well enough, you an add flourishes after. For animation specifically usually simple up and down is enough.
I agree that timing matters the most because that is what feels off when a script is off. Maybe I didn’t get it across as the video above isn’t super clear what is happening unless you can slow it down and because of the blur from censorship. My philosophy in my scripting has changed over time and I try and remove extra points and go with as simple as I can, but I try and match speed and motion when I can. In this case there is two competing motions, she is moving up and down in a steady rhythm and that is easy enough to script. He on the other hand has a somewhat awkward thrust timing thrown in.
I think the thing that throws me off here is the awkward timing of the male thrust upward. The thrust upward is during her upward movement which is the first triangle on the lower script then they both come down together, hit the bottom, which is the bump, and then she starts going back up and then comes another thrust.
I’m probably overthinking it as it is all very quick and the simpler script matches her movement which is what most people (including myself) are going to focus on and not notice his thrust timings.
This varies by scripter but if I was doing the stroke axis for this i’d include a delay at the top and bottom since the penis does a single fast stroke on entry/exit. The girl on top has more visual movement so I can totally get wanting to script that though. The realism in this scene would be fast exit/entry and delays at the bottom and top. Be careful not to stop movement completely, just slow it down if you go that route.
timeline
0 → 1 bottom of the curve to right before the dude pulls out quickly
1 → 7 during the fast pullout up to when the movement stops/slows
7 → 8 → 7 from the initial pullout slowdown to change of direction to right before the fast stroke
7 → 1 → 0 from fast stroke to slowdown to change of direction.
or maybe something like this if that doesn’t feel right, this will give the script more ‘bounce’
1 → 8 from fast pullout to change of direction
8 → 7 from change of direction to right before fast stroke
7 → 0 from fast stroke to change of direction
0 → 1 from direction change to right before pullout.
Interesting ideas. I’ve come up with 2 possible routes other than just scripting the up down of her. One incorporates a little of what you suggested with a slow down - delay - slow up for right after the thrust into dropdown and then pull out.
The second I was thinking of going 1 of 2 directions. Either a quick drop down from the thrust into a slow build-up for her drop down since there does appear to be a little movement there. Or I do a quick drop for the thrust from 7/8 to 1 followed by a slow down to 0 for her drop down and then up for the pullout. Gif below of each one.
Need to test to see if either feels right or not. Who knows maybe I do just go back to scripting her up down anyway. You’ve given me something to think about and try, thanks.
I am not sure there is a “best” way and a “worst” way. OFS speed bias up/down sometimes works like a charm, and on other scripts I have made, it feels wrong. Sometimes multiple points give a great feel, on others not so much. I usually follow a simple idea, the faster the action, the simpler I make it.
it for sure falls to preference, IMO matching action is better for experience but matching the vibe is better for how it feels. real life ain’t perfectly choreographed and its expected to have pauses, but that’s what kinda makes it so good. if it was perfectly linear it would create a disconnect between what your watching and what your feeling which some might not be a fan of.
In positions like that, in both hentai and IRL scenes I’ve scripted, I’ve defaulted to match what the girl is doing.
If both the male and female are moving but at a slightly different rhythm, I default to the female’s movement. This happens somewhat often in VR scenes like during close up missionary, doggy with twerking, etc.
I went through same thing you did years ago and I just concluded that it felt better following the female’s movements instead even though it’s not actually what is shown.
@Sigvart76 I agree as with this as that has been the change in my scripting philosophy. I used to try the slow in and slow out more but I try and keep it as simple as I can especially for faster movements.
@Jollychap Yeah, I mean we aren’t going to please everyone and a lot of the times I alter scripts to suit my own preferences.
@bumdude I think this is where I am falling on this topic. I was able to test the above alterations and while it felt better than the initial up-down-bump-up there was still something off about it. I think it falls back to what you said, her larger movements in my eyes take precedence over the male’s smaller movements. Especially I think because the only thing moving on him is the waist, where her whole body is moving. Therefore trying to follow his movements just leads to a disconnecting feeling.
