A small rant on filesizes

Thanks that you like my script that much g90ak .

If 19cmlang doesn’t like me, it is totally ok for me. I say what I think even it is not nice. I can handle the feedback from being not the good guy :innocent:

These days PC monitors have a trend of using 1440p. There arent a lot of reasons anymore to go for 1080p other than costs, or wanting a higher framerate. And on 1440p, 4k content is a lot better.

But on that, not everyone uses a PC. But thats the same with VR. I would not be surprised if some people use something like a tablet even.

Variety of content sizes is usualy optimal, even more when a 4k version is supplied. There is a reason youtube still supports sizes like 240p. And while its not porn, the distribution there usualy isnt going to differ too much either. Sure, those who invest in VR might be more likely to go for higher resolutions, and maybe done visit youtube often on that. But the other way around might also be equaly true. And 1080p is still the dominating screen size. And this also includes those who watch YT on their 4k tv (on which the app usualy is already installed).

While this thread started as a complaint about file sizes, I love discussing video quality/display tech a ton, so I’ll bite  What I was more referring to, for the vast majority of people viewing content on a PC monitor, the typical viewing distance and “criticality” of the average viewer won’t show a dramatic difference between 1K and 4K content. Even if we’re comparing 1080p to 1440p monitors. (1920x1080 is still most common as of Nov 2022 - Desktop Screen Resolution Stats Worldwide | Statcounter Global Stats and Steam Hardware & Software Survey)

Yes, there are more discerning users (like myself), that care about getting the highest quality possible, and CAN tell the difference. (I’m also the guy who hunted FLAC files even though I can’t tell the diff between 320kbps and lossless). I was merely saying that 4K video, for the vast majority of users, is not going to make a difference on a PC monitor and is not why I put forth so much effort upscaling/HFR’ing.

Totally agree. They’re not the target audience for my huge files.

This is where I have a problem with the “rant.” Nothing provided on this site is a service. Files, scripts, links, etc. are provided by community.

If this was a commercial video sharing/streaming site, ABSOLUTELY - upscales should be banned, and original content in a variety of resolutions should be DEMANDED. However, people MUST understand that Eroscripts is a community that is built by the work of users. If someone wants a 720p version of a 4K video, they should get off their ass and find one or encode one themselves. And to get a gold star - if they feel other members of the community want it as well - they can share it too (if it’s okay with the scripter).

I’ve said this before, if the leech part of the community treats the contributing part of the community as a service organization, none of this is going to work. Scripters will create scripts for themselves with no incentive to share. Personally this type of thread makes me feel like not sharing my upscales if its going to harm people’s hard drive storage space so dramatically. They’re hard work and cost $ in electricity and equipment. Seeing complaints about large file sizes is pretty demoralizing.

Said in a more positive way, I’ve tried to be an active and contributing member of this community even without the time to script. There are so many ways to participate constructively. I see opportunities for lower quality encodes, un-VR’ing of 3d content, user review system of script quality, more top 10 lists, script of the month contest, etc. etc. etc. The rules here are very lax - if someone wants to improve something - don’t bitch… GO FOR IT! Nothing is stopping us.

Sometimes it’s hard to put yourself into someone else shoes. So i’ll share why I prefer higher resolution videos and appreciate the amazing upscales provided by @g90ak and others.

I am looking for an immersive experience. So I use my VR headset for everything from POV style 2D videos to VR content. Therefore a higher resolution video especially for 2D content is a must for me to have an enjoyable experience.

My Rant. I have seen these “rants” from time to time on ES. It’s quite baffling to me that users get scripts and sometimes an associated video FOR FREE and they have the balls to complain that it is not good enough. Maybe it is basement dweller mentality but a 2 minute google search never harmed anyone :man_shrugging:.

I actualy wasnt realy talking about the supply on the site here in that statement, it was still about the screen sizes that are being used. And as 240p is still there, it shows that there are still enough people that cant watch higher quality content for whatever reason.

That its all just community content, and basicly purely focussed on scripts is obvious. And a lot of these things can even be resolved by the community when asked anyway. If a video only has a 4k source, why not ask for a 1080p version? There are enough people willing to do that for you. But without asking, that wont happen anyway.

And the site doesnt, and tbh shouldnt help people at this part either. As when they start helping at this part, they are obviously getting on a dangerous line of potentialy promoting piracy. The site is about scripts, and that should remain its focus. If the video is down, so be it. Nothing stops you from asking, and as often enough already has been shown, someone will eventualy respond.

I want a new BMW 335…should the community help me get it or is it my problem/issue to deal with that I can’t afford it?

@g90ak If people have crappy storage limitations, that’s their issue, why even worry about it mate? People want to watch good porn but live in the 1990’s with their system again, that’s their problem.

This is very much a case of I want I want I want and the whole damn world has to bend over backwards to accommodate their choices in not being in this century. I have bad internet, not enough storage, can’t download such a big file…it will take 5 days to dl blah blah…THEIR problem.

So ya live in the middle of the Uzbekistan mountains and it takes you 15 mins to find a connection at old dial up speeds…tough…suck it up princesses. We don’t all get what we want in this world cos the world is neither fair, just or equal.

The problem with your BMW example is the same reason why certain anti piracy videos were joked about. They dont compare.

A digital resource is usualy just a copy without an effective limit in supply. You can make millions of copies, and the only limiting factor is storage space.

For cars the limiting factors are the actual materials, and production time for each seperate car. Something a video doesnt usualy face.

Yes, downscaling on that does cost a bit of power. But this can save storage space as a result of that. You cant downscale a BMW in the same way.

The older I get, it surprises me less and less that 1: there are people who complain NO MATTER WHAT you do for them. And 2: there are people who are too dense to understand that video technology moves forward. If you dont want the hassle of reverting shit yourself, you need to upgrade your gear. Its an issue of people wanting to be both lazy AND cheap. Imagine a guy bitching about all the free movies we share were on DVD but HE still has VHS. Same principle. Thank you for all that you do g90ak. You are appreciated.

Sir, this thread was from a year ago

Roughly 100% of the videos I watch are with the Valve Index… And my smut drive is currently 3.79TB/6.36TB.

A lot of that used space is courtesy of g90ak…

Those huge files that are created by AI upscaling software like Topaz, can be made a lot smaller with Handbrake without losing quality.
