Any Interest in Guitar Pedal Style Script modifiers? [Poll]

I made them already. Preview in the comments / marked as the solution to this topic if anyone cares.

I’ve recently been on a coding kick, which has been really nice since I haven’t done any in a long time. Someone mentioned something about music and scripts and it got me thinking about back when I used to create virtual guitar pedals. Funscripts are basically just like audio waves, right? So why not make a bunch of effects?

I just had my first play with it and created a spring-delay effect. It basically takes the waveform and puts it on a simulated spring, where you can change all the properties of the spring. It’s pretty neato.

Basically I just want to know if this is something that seems interesting to people / if it’s worth my time. These sorts of things are really easy to throw together if you know how, but even so it takes time. The real heavy lift is making the GUI because that shit SUCKS.

Right now this spring effect allows users to specify:

Stiffness of spring
Spring Dampening
Whether you want the spring to be able to overshoot the set point or not (do you want it bouncy basically)
Whole bunch of stuff around point decimation

I think it could be cool for script users to get some more life out of scripts they have used a lot, and also maybe for creative script writers who have very specific effects in mind, to avoid hand scripting. For example, if you wanted to make a scene with elasti-girl this spring effect could be kinda thematic, like her insides are made of rubber or something idk.

Anyways, poll time:

  • I’d personally use guitar-pedal-like post processing on funscripts if they were available
  • I would not use effects if they were available.

And, if you said you’d use them, which of these possible effects interests you (feel free to select more than one):

  • Distortion (Smart Vibration)
  • Fuzz (Square Wave Conversion)
  • Wah (Idk, some kind of sine wave thing)
  • Spring Reverb/Delay (See above)
  • Looper / Real Delay (Copy chunks of script and attempt to replay them overtop of incoming script)

UPDATE: After some testing of the potential of these “pedals”/plugins/whatever, I’ve decided I will be releasing them for free (and begging for donations haha). Already they are cool and powerful tools, and I don’t want to restrict folks access to cool and powerful tools.

  • I’d use if free
  • I’d use if cheap ($1 per effect or less)
  • I’d buy as long as the price is reasonable
  • I’d buy literally anything from you ;)

Thanks for your interest, if there is any haha.
If no one wants them, I’ll probably make them for myself regardless.

Oh, you’re a genius! Applying audio processing methods to script processing is such a cool idea!

I’ve literally just been playing with this spring tool prototype for like an hour now.

I’m leaning more towards Audio processing inspired methods to script processing. Actual audio processes would suck for funscripts. Distortion, for example, is just amplifying the wave till it clips. Distorted scripts would just be flat at 100 most of the time haha.

I mostly just like the idea of creating customizable and unique effects to apply over already created scripts. Already, I have found that with high damper and low stiffness on this tool I can get a smoothing/rounding effect

Still bugs to knock out, and lots of redundent points being generated but it’s still pretty cool. Also, the sproingy bouncing effect when there is a little pop is awesome. Genuinely don’t know how you’d get that otherwise without spending hours hand placing points.

This is a unique idea I never even considered. Curious how it turns out and what types of variations there could be

While I was messing around with the physics simulation code making the spring it occured to me that you could apply a gravity “physics sim” to the funscript points. Just threw that together, since I added the ability for the spring effect to “bounce” off the top and bottom range of the funscript.

Now I have a tool that makes slow lazy upward strokes, and hammers down hard + bounces on 0. Pretty cool!

I think the possibilities are pretty much endless.

Disclaimer: prototype, there’s too many points being generated, etc etc

Although it looks great in OFS, in real-world scenarios it may cause the machine to fail to keep up with such dense points and rapid speed changes, resulting in poor synchronization.

The limitations of the hardware restrict people’s imagination when creating scripts.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the results after further optimization!

The density of points has already been solved, at this point I’m just working on getting the tools to work how I’d imagine they ought to. I’ve also included a bunch of user control over when, where, and how many points are used to create the script.

I probably won’t do any speed limiting. I think part of the fun of these tools will be occasionally creating rediculous scripts with them. Which is why I’m going to add in an effect multiplier slider:

image

So if the effect is too much you can tone it down, but you can also just decide “I’d like 5x more spring.”

I wanted to add knobs but gui is not my thing.

EDIT: Bottom is what the spring script looks like with all default settings as of right now, top is original script, obviously still tweaking:

Since I don’t have anywhere to post updates about what I’m working on I’ll just post here:

Wah pedal is looking interesting.

going to come with an envelope simulator so you can see what it’s going to do to the script before you run it

Currently 6 sliders that allow the envelope to be modified. I think this could be interesting to pmvs/hmvs to make them more varied.

Dev blog haha:

Mentioned above, but I’ve decided I will be releasing all of these for free, for anyone to use as they want.

Spring tool is “done”

Gives tons of customization options, but the presets are all set up so that if you want a spring effect you don’t have to do any tweaking. The gui is giving me early 2000s windows xp vibes, but I’m not artistic enough to make it look like anything else haha

Planning on releasing all the pedals in a pack together, so still a bit of development to go. Current presents are:

A classic spring – does what you’d expect. It’s sproingy. Creates a bit of noise in fast sections, but works great on scripts with slow action that do little pops of high speed.

A dense spring – does something similar to classic, but with more dampening. Sort of what I’d imagine a spring with thicker wire would do; only distorts/does the sproingy up-down motion on very fast changes/ after a lot of action accumulates in the spring. (It sort of builds up momentum, if that makes sense)

Spring smoothing – probably the thing I think will actually be the most useful for people who are just general scripting. Smooths out/rounds peaks into sine-wave like patterns. Might need more honing depending on what you use it for.

Also, added the option to apply the effect only to certain sections of the script. For people who only want the smoothing / bounciness on one section of a compilation, maybe. No clue, but I added it.

…

Currently working on the Wah pedal some more. That is nearly done as well.

Prototyping for:
Bitcrusher (already looks cool and is simple enough that it’s basically already done.)
Gravity sim (posted a sample above of the first go at that, already looking much better.)
Distortion (even though no one asked for it. Can’t be a guitar pedal collection without it though)
“Whip.” (If movement above a speed/distance threshold ends above 70, delays slightly, then creates a “whip crack” effect)

Brainstorming:
Some more joke/novelty plugins. Any ideas welcome, no matter how stupid.

Considering creating a custom fader “pedal” where you input a short funscript and that script is used to modify a different script. Imagine you create a 3 second script that goes from 0 to 100 to 0 in an arc. That file is used as a modifier for, lets say, amplification of a script. So it would go from no action, to full action, to no action. With the time specification added into the spring script, a user could create custom fade-in effects to apply to their scripts during sections of video that fade in from black. Or do the same for fade-outs. If I do create this tool, planning on having multiple options to select in addition to amplification; maybe speed-limit enveloping would be cool? Idk. Also realizing after typing this that inputing a funscript for instructions is probably a dumb idea and could/should just be done in the tool.

Got really distracted on GUI elements and coming up with names for the pedals…

4 working prototypes. I don’t want to like brag or anything but they are all rad as hell. I’ve tested them all out on some scripts and they are all at least interesting.

If anyone reads this and wants to send me a script to process, I’d be happy to repost the processed scripts here for testing purposes.

Going to start packaging them up tomorrow to post as downloadable .exe files.

There are currently 7, and I’ll avoid writing long descriptions here as I’ll have to redo when I make that post tomorrow but (spoiler warning if anybody even cares):

  1. Elasticator – Spring effect. It’s much cleaner than the demo up above.
  2. funBitsBasher – Bitcrusher. Turns funscripts into steps that maybe remind you of pixels … somehow.
  3. AdrenalineTremor – Unique vibration tool. Hidden “adrenaline” meter that increases when speed over a threshold is maintained for a long time, and decreases when it drops under the threshold. As adrenaline gets higher, amplitude of the vibration increases.
  4. HeavyLoad – Gravity simulator. It’s much cleaner than the demo above.
  5. Magnet – Define a point from 0 to 100 and a range around it. Points in range of your “magnet” point are either drawn in or pushed away
  6. Wah-Lah – Oscillating enveloping tool. Take the entire funscript pattern and compress/expand it to fit inside a wave pattern you define. Really powerful!
  7. WhipOnMyScripTil-I-Uh-WhipOnMy-Uh – It’s, well, it’s a whip. It makes your funscript like a whip.

Every tool has at least 6 slider bars that give the user full control of a bunch of variables, as well as 3 presets for people who don’t want to fuck with sliders (after fucking with sliders for 2 days now, I understand that feeling very well.)

Oh, and custom gui for each one, custom icons, and hopefully it’s all nicely packaged into an .exe that runs on Mac + Windows. Possibly for free? I said for free before. It’s been a ton of work guys (I say that but I would put money that no one reads this, so maybe it doesn’t matter what I said before haha.)

They are 100% done now. Didn’t realize how much of a pain in the ass all the editing of text, tweaking presets, and making exe files would be, because HOLY SHIT was that annoying.

Enjoy the 100% free icons I sourced/made by hand. Big fan of the forklift personally. Getting a feeling from how dead this post has been that interest in this project is HIGH.

Each one is like 4-5 hundred lines of python script. Granted, each tool shares gui + features with eachother and some of it was a copy paste job, but that’s still like 3k lines of code I hand wrote.

Provide some sample scripts so that people can see what it’s capable of. I was impressed and think you could be onto something, Little Big John

I will 100% do a better job of this comparison/explanations stuff when I make the post where people can download. Here’s some scripts if people want to compare.

Ignore this. I had to insert a random other funscript in the middle of these to stop the heatmaps from merging.

Everything is set to a speedlimit of 750 (except the whip script, which doesn’t have a speed limit, because it’s a meme tool.) Speedlimit is adjustable by slider.

Also, the “no modifications” bit is because every tool has like 7 sliders so they can be customized to do all sorts of things not demonstrated here.

You’re quite the mad scientist, aren’t you? Love this creative approach to waveform processing.

I will gladly take the title of mad scientist haha. I’ve already got a little brainstormed list of new effects I’d like to make in the future that are significantly dumber/have more novelty than these ones do. And I’ll probably make them if this project does even moderately well.

I keep pushing back posting the exes because I keep running into little improvements/tweaks I’d like to make (mostly in packaging and presentation.) Also the site is most active on Saturday which always makes me procrastinate posting big projects.

I’m also very happy with the little icon I have for the program:

Lots of interesting ideas lined up. Hope everything goes smoothly when you finally release it. :+1: :glowing_star:

My internet died as soon as I posted it, so i didn’t have a chance to update here… :smiling_face_with_tear:

Anyways, the tool is done. It is a healthy balance between free and paid content. You can get 2 of the tools absolutely free or all 7 (plus whatever else I make + add to it in the future) for $9.99. Thanks to everyone who commented/voted above, even if it was only a small number of folks. I appreciated the support.
