Backbone(r): Hands free solution for the Handy 2, Stanley Vice and Camera gear

Edit: I am in the process of setting up an etsy for the Backbone(r). The problem is that shipping to the US is quite a hassle and cost prohibitive. Solution: I have found a company that will print and ship the Backbone(r) locally around the world. This will mean a much lower shipping cost for most countries. The etsy page still has to be finished but luckily the printing company also gives the ability to run a shop front. Included are the Backbone(r) made out of FDM printed PETG, two screws and a hex key for mounting the Handy 2

Several features have been implemented to make usage of the Backbone(r) more user friendly.

  • The indentations along the sides are made to snugly fit the Stanley Vice jaws. This way minimal movement is guaranteed.
  • The rail at the back can be clamped in a camere quick release mount.
  • Buttons on the side are freely accessible.
  • Can be used upside down.
  • A hole had been added to allow the usb-c charging cable to be connected while the Handy 2 is being used.
  • No matter how the Backbone(r) is mounted, a slot at the back prevents the charging cable to get pinched.
  • Uses both mounting inserts for stability.

I recommend using the C version as it can be mounted on both the Stanley as camera quick release mounts.

Also, I’m planning on selling the printed version on etsy. Give a shout out if you’re interested.

Is there a link to Etsy to buy this? And can the vice also be sold with it, or a link to amazon or somthing to buy it?

I would certainly buy this. I have the vice, but where can I buy the Backbone(r)? Thanks!

Not printing and selling myself rn. I am setting up an etsy store but need some time as it is the first time doing so. The models are free to download so there’s nothing standing in the way of going to a 3d printing service and ordering a print yourself.

I know that a redditor has gone to weerg.com and ordered a nylon sls printed version.

I would also check out jlc3d.com as they have competitive pricing.

For the vice check stanley vice on amazon.

Thanks. Which screws did you use? It looks like 1/4 20 (12mm long) screws.

Correct. Check the printables link for al the info. I also have some affiliate links in there that will point you to the right products and help me get a bit of pocket money.

Hey, I just wamted to ask what you mean by camera gear? Is it possible to direct me to where this has already been explained before?

It makes use of the quick release mount found on many camera tripods and other gear. You can clamp it in like you do with a camera.

I was planning on printing them myself and sending them out though I’m now planning to use a 3d printing service 3dapi that will print locally all over the world. This will have the benefit of only having to pay local shipping fees. We will also try to include the necessary screws for added convenience.

The link in op tells more about it.

Is there a possibility of designing a lower profile version I don’t have a stanley vice but I use the camera rail and with how thick the backbone is I feel its limiting the positioning of the handy 2 pro

The thickness does add a significant amount of strength to the part. I’m afraid that thinning it out would make the whole thing wobbly and prone to snapping.

Thanks mate!
This is a life saver for my setup!

Hi, I received my order today but am missing the screws and Allen key? I thought they were included as per your description: “The Backbone(r) comes with screws and allen key. The default material of the Backbone(r) is PETG…”

You are correct. An Allen key and two screws should have been included. Would you be so kind to send a message via the store? I will also raise the problem internally.

IT. WORKS. PERFECTLY!

real talk though, not only did it hold the h2p in place in my stanely vice for a LONG session today, as my desk is (kind of) wobbly, I was/ have been worried about hands free setups in the past, as they sometimes cause my desk to shake with intense scripts. This thing also worked as a shock absorber! no shaking that I could tell, nothing nearly as major for that matter. so it did its job + extra. couldnt ask for much more.

if I HAD to mention my one gripe so far, its that the usb slot makes it somewhat (not overly) difficult to plug in the charger, (I think due to the depth required to plug it in, but that does seem like a design choice, rather than a flaw) but once its in you should be good

Love the look of this, @Priapussucky does this ship with discreet packaging?

Received mine recently, have been using it and is really good, very sturdy, stable, had no problems with the holes for the charging and it does give more stability to where the Stanley is attached to.

Insanely good job mate!

The only thing i could point for a possible improvement would be to apply some kind of support like a cup or something to the opposite side that doesn’t have screws in it, so you could slide/fit it in, because using it in a inversed slider setup, the handy 2 will wobble a tiny bit on that end, not much but it’s noticeable.

This is more like a precaution, because with prolonged use that way, it could damage or even break, but only time can tell to be honest.

Either way mate, thank you so much for this, really good job :victory_hand:
