Most sex toys are at a diffirent level in costs vs features vs power. Synchronized content is a niche on its own. Im quite sure that a lot of launch or handy users never even connect it to the internet and just use the buttons.
(a diffirence to what you say as that still includes things like faptap and SLR being used which are just a convenience service and a great help to people)
These users should be excluded from the comparison as that is not the target audience. These users for devices generaly will only look at a few things: How strong is it, how easy is it to use, how quickly does it break? For these users even SLR videos themselve are meaningless.
But as long as you have some control outside of the internet, you can at least keep your device as a potential purchase. Which isnt a bad thing.
Download + a script player is the most basic and failproof way to ensure a device remains usable. And a use case that even for proper internet countries is still a thing.
Just imagine internet being down for a day. No youtube, netflix or anything, You are bored… guess which device might get its use now. Especialy with some local content. Thats why its essential.
It has nothing to do with DRM being a problem since its applied everywhere and seen as a norm these days, it has to do with the moment you will hate it most when it has DRM and it doesnt work when you most need it.
Its easy to prepare a few videos and scripts for internet outages. Not supporting it will feel like a massive restriction. Enough to rate your product 1/5 stars. And if you dont have anything prepared… it suddenly doesnt feel like a downside as thats your own mistake then. But if you know other devices can, yet the device you have cant, its that 1/5 star moment. Good luck losing a customer with a bad rating that will forever stick and guarantee you some extra lost sales (i would never buy such product myself - even when before i had the osr2).
Marketing isnt always about showing what your product can, its also about when it can, during times that are most anoying, where you are glad it works. That will make people happy, and its those times that will also cause people to post 5/5 ratings without even being required to ask them. Thats why DRM is a bad idea.
Note that even steam, which has DRM, does allow offline play for quite some time after you go offline, it still does the check occasionaly against abuse, but during a simple downtime, it at least still works. DRM here while being a restriction, at least doesnt hinder people.
And if properly configuired, will warn ahead of time when people are taking a risk. for example: a week before the token expires asking you to log in again to refresh it. Even the SLR firmware could have such system, and can be anoying for some. But if it works, and works during outages… whats the problem?
