I’m going to hate saying it without remembering but you can get this working with a handy. I spent some time setting up what I think might have been script player, virtual deskop, vam, and with quest 3 headset.
I believe in VAM i had a plugin that handled changing the background to a greenscreen color which would then match to the virtual desktop settings for passthrough. You would have to rip off the background in some scenes to get the passthrough.
For connecting to the handy I think I had found handy enabled scenes that had set the plugin up nicely through a menu, so just needed the scriptplayer as the receiver of the vam singal and that drove the handy.
In the end I was with most people here where the set up was kind of phenomenal once, but the work up front to do stuff with VAM is too much for me. I had stopped with VAM a while back as well when I tried to make my own stuff I’d often lose 30 min of work sometimes to exploding physics or other things that I just didn’t 100% know what I was doing. However I still grabbed community stuff as the scene quality and menuing has improved, I just can’t make my own things.
In the end I realized I genuinely don’t know what it is exactly I want, typically a good vredging scene with slow tease and build up is good, but there are women that move in a certain languid sensual way that is super rare in porn but what I really want when using a handy. So it’s a combo of finding a scene with that, finding the girl attractive, and finding a great script that I’d want to replicate.
I will say though that strongly agree how the passthrough VR is scaled horribly and they make no attempt to film at an angle to make it work and the new VR scenes are super low quality and rare to find women as attractive as the early generation of VR stars. VAM really does nail the scale and putting it in your room it’s very easy to forget it’s a virtual character and not feel like you do have someone in your room.
I think if VAM 2 in like 50 years is able to make creation smoother and more stable or at least let creators provide stable scenes it can be a good companion to traditional VR movies. But again I am really counting on the performer knowing how to move more so than I know how they should move and you can’t really make that yourself easily imho.
There really is a dream vr girlfriend setup waiting for the tech to put together a culmination of AI chatbot, text to speech, handly, vr + passthrough experience, the pieces are here, but the jank is high and the work done will always be hobbyist and will be slow to advance. Right now it is very hard to compete with the speed of a handy hands free setup + vr in terms of getting set up, having a huge choice (with a big library of videos) and quick teardown and cleanup, so makes it more practical.
I agree though that that big investment in the setup you have once done will get you close, I think many of us though are unable to put the time in to get there to begin. All that said, thank you for sharing so much detail about yoursetup and getting the word out where I think this tech can go.
